What is osteoporosis and what can we do to help?
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones lose strength, and they can break (fracture) more easily. If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, it doesn’t always mean you will break a bone, but you will be at higher risk. One in two women and one in five men will be affected by osteoporosis. As we age, we naturally begin to lose bone strength, and it happens earlier than you’d expect- from around thirty!
Children need to exercise to develop good bone health, but we need to maintain activity levels and exercise to keep our bones strong as well as our muscles.
A combination of weight bearing and muscle strengthening exercises are the most effective. The Royal Osteoporosis Society www.theros.org.uk has a lot of useful information about osteoporosis and examples of safe effective exercise for different abilities. It’s an excellent resource for people wanting to find out more about the condition. There is also a free helpline.
We’re pleased to be professional members of the Royal Osteoporosis Society ensuring we keep up to date on best practice and the latest research.
